Bookshelf
Stores
Celebrating the power of
the written word and the pleasures of reading.
Bookshelf Stores, Inc. has two locations in
the Tahoe Sierra Region of
California. We are an independent bookstore, not a chain, and our
knowledgeable staff reads the books we sell and can offer personal service
for all your book needs. We specialize in books for and about the area.
We carry several sidelines in addition to our large stock of books (and our
ability to special-order almost any title):
|
Both stores have calendars,
greeting cards, blank journals, and
magazines, as well as quick reference guides, local cookery
books, and
a complete selection of children's books for babies through
teens.
|

Each store carries Burt's Bees earth-friendly,
natural
personal care products.
|
The Truckee
store sells Bright Lights candles,
which are
slow-burning scented candles made with natural palm oils and
beeswax.

Our
Beginnings
The original Bookshelf Store - Bookshelf at
Hooligan Rocks - opened in
Truckee in 1992, and was named for the historic boulders near the store
where the 601 Vigilante Committee used to tar and feather
"hooligans" and
send them on their way. During Truckee's first dogsled races (which Jack
London attended), one of the more accomplished contestants was detained at
gunpoint behind the Hooligan Rocks in order to allow the local favorite to
win.

|
Owner Deborah Lane worked at a retail store in New Hampshire before
heading west, and wanted to offer the community a store with two
emphases: |
 |
|
- a knowledgeable,
committed, and well-read staff;
- and a collection featuring regional titles that
included publications on westward immigration and the Donner Party; books
by local authors and illustrators; and recreation and nature
guides for the Tahoe/Sierra region. |
|
|
Since its humble beginnings,
Bookshelf has expanded to two
stores : the original Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks in Truckee, now in
a
bigger and better location; and Bookshelf at the Boatworks, overlooking
Lake
Tahoe from the Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City.
